27 July 2009

i have a secret to tell you.
lend me your beautiful ear:

trust your life as it unfolds
you just never know what this moment, this day, this week is holding for you.

19 July 2009

let no one tell you otherwise.

sunday morning does not usually represent a day when i wake up early. monday thru friday, yes; saturday, sometimes; sunday, not a chance, unless its a cold day in july. which was, exactly what today was in kentucky, folks.

today i woke up at 630 and was out of the house in time for a run with my friend lilly. a 6 mile run with my friend lilly.

"what are you thinking," i asked myself when i hung up the phone after making plans with her. i am in shape, and i've been running, but i haven't been running that distance or at that hour in some time. especially not on a sunday.

"it was the revelation," my heart insisted, "go with it. give it a try."

what revelation? and did it involve too much tequila? {i know what you're thinking and the answer is no.} totally sober, and totally level headed, i had a revelation yesterday. {i've had a FEW of them this weekend}

i am always running, but i'm never training for the event: the race that reveals how much passion i poured into this. the fruit of my labor. the mini marathon or 10k event where you take a picture when you're done: sweaty and smiling.

i need to back up. {cracking open a bit here} i had a bit of a breakdown earlier this week. i was meeting with a trusted individual who helps me navigate my health & wellness goals and has been doing so since january of this year. she's really wonderful, supportive, trusting, and honest. so her ability to make claim to those characteristics offers me the opportunity to do the same. when the news came in this week that linden vineyards is a no go for august, my heart cracked just a little bit in two. i was really hoping for this opportunity. really really hoping. and i've been delaying a lot of joys in hopes of this one, and i'm here to tell you that ain't the way it works, ladies & gents.

so much has been delayed since i moved to kentucky. its hard to explain and would be extremely painful to do so in full, but take my word for it, i've been putting things off, and when i met with trusted individual on tuesday, i got really clear about that. and it really crushed my heart. i came up with so many things that i've been putting off until i am in a "better, more settled place." (um, never-never land?)

examples: volunteering, trips, business/career opportunities, book clubs, races, education, personal goals. {cringing just looking at that list}

anyhow, the revelation. so i'm talking to my mom, explaining how heartbroken i was this week, how much i needed to get out of neutral and get into gear, how much i'm running with no real goal in mind, and it clicks: people who succeed plan to succeed. they put in the extra hours, they put in millions of minutes of effort directed at one specific goal. they volunteer every week. they run 4 times a week because they are signed up to run 13.1 miles in mid-september and they must be ready. they save their cash because they want to buy a house. they make plans and don't put them off until later. their footing slips, their rope snaps, their ankle gets sprained, but they keep on. they do what it takes. the understanding of how much it takes to succeed finally clicked.

so you better believe it that my culo was out of bed this morning at 630 am. you can bet your bottom dollar that it will be tomorrow, too. i will be doing what it takes to live one, wondrous life. i will be strapping on my running shoes, day in and day out, pounding the pavement with purpose. (and really, let me be clear that running is just the analogy. this can apply across the board of life)

and let me post this one reminder, too:
all of this is nothing unless you've established what it is that you love and are passionate about. pursue it fiercely. stand tall in your willingness to succeed and get graceful with yourself. obstacles will present themselves, frequently, and you and i will keep on. let no one tell you otherwise. get clear with yourself, for once and for all, and then, get to it. my friend alex, a woman i adore on so many levels {and who celebrates her 25th bday tomorrow!}, wrote something i'll never forget:
"there is a lot to love out there. get to it."

i'll leave you with that. {and it's my nap time, too.}

i heart custom work

hey there! slowly but surely i'm reemerging after a lovely holiday in charleston, south carolina.

just wanted to put up a note over here about what i'm working on today...listing cards/mixed media pieces/journals over in my etsy shop. i'm always updating, but right now i'm updating as much as i can...trying to get all of the work up and out there for the world to see (and maybe purchase!) case you didn't know, i love custom work. my favorite work is custom work, so if you have a special occasion coming up, please keep me in mind! cards, journals, frames, mixed media pieces, placecards, menus, invitations...i do and love to do it all! a new thing i'll be doing with etsy is adding the image (above) to remind folks about my passion for custom work.

happy saturday. i'll be back with more soon! xoxox

snapshots III & custom place cards

i know you're thinking, "shorty, where have you been?!"

ok, maybe that's NOT what you're thinking, but i am feeling like i haven't been frequenting this space enough and want to be spending more time around here. so before i send off for a long weekend, i want to provide a thursday snapshot!

making: custom placecards (see below)
drinking: chocolate green superfood (omg delicious!)
reading: still life with woodpecker by tom robbins
listening: once soundtrack, it has evolved again
wearing: new seven straight cropped jeans

now my main reason for the post was to share pics of the placecards i've been working on. a dear friend of mine is gifting them to her friends--fabulous twins who are turning 26! their birthday party will be at FIG in Charleston, SC, and as a special gift to their guests, they will send them off with a hand written note inside these beauties! i always have a listing up on etsy for custom placecards---click here for more info. i design & assemble & scribe them myself, and always have a custom card for the guest of honor, in this case, Laura & Victoria. hope you enjoy this pics of the finished product!

very special blossoming placecards for the bday girls!

(side view) these are tent-style placecards with a fabric/french dictionary/honey yellow cardstock flower mounted onto them with a mixed metal brad to hold it all together! the fabric came from a fantastic etsy seller, spice berry cottage

the soldiers, all lined up! (and looking very swanky!)

boys like flowers, too, right?

closeup of the guest of honor card! (sorry for the semi-blurry pic)

well i'm off to get this day started. much love & blossoming! xoxox

be of good courage

{my barnyard girl, showing off her skills. sold.
i still have the original image though,
so there may be more of a similar look!}

have you ever had one of those days when:
  • you race out of the house with wet hair, and when you finally get to your destination, sweating of course, you realize there was no need to race at all?
  • you look down after 3pm and realize your panties are inside out (but thankfully not backwards)?
  • you, despite all odds, do what it takes to plug in, pray with fierce faith, and make your day the very best one you can imagine?
that's been the kind of day i had...but despite all this, i still found the courage to slip into the blink boutique and try on shoshanna bathing suit i've been dying for. afterwards, i threw on my workout clothes and hit up a new class: ZUMBA! have you ever done this?? seriously the MOST fun workout a person can think of. it's so high energy and so right on target for toning, booty shaking, and breaking a good, well-deserved sweat! i loved it...

home now with a smoothie (carrot juice, fresh spinach, frozen blueberries, NF yogurt, 1/2 banana, peanut butter) and a pile of place cards. finishing these up tonight and shipping them to charleston, along with myself and PW on thursday. we are so excited!!! hope you're up to something good tonight, despite what obstacles might cause you to trip a little bit, i seriously and enthusiastically encourage you to keep it going! be of good courage.

the process

did you know that life is a process?
that you start off with an idea, as your pursue it,
you adjust to the flow, you go!
did you know that that your days are blank canvases?
that you choose to paint and play?
a long time ago i stripped down my inspiration board (which is just a canvas)
i had the intention of creating some totally new, totally different.
i didn't know what that was.
i just started painting and playing.

above: my blank (stripped) canvas. oh wow.

above: brown gesso'ed canvas, as well as the inspiration pallette, tools, etc.

above: the painting.

above: tissue paper overlay---some john derian italian handwritten letter. perfect.

above: paper cutting and letter choosing.
and as you play on that blank canvas, something comes to life.
the finale: i ended up turning a blank canvas into a sign for my art fair booth.
(which i hadn't known about when i started the project)
it simply became.

above: the finished product.
and a proud cardmaker!
let's be honest: i'm not that fancy or anything.
but i'm passionate about paper. glue. beauty.
i believe in the process.
how long it takes.
how much it asks of us.
as individuals.
as humans.
if you're in or around louisville this weekend,
please stop by and see some of my most recent work.
i'll be at the old fashioned 4th of july in crescent hill at the peterson-dumesnil house
all day saturday and sunday
i would love to see some of you!
i have 100+ new pieces to sell
handmade cards/journals/canvases, etc
a few peeks of the new work:

hope to see you there!
